Trans & Gender Affirmative Care

My contribution to AAMFT’s gender-affirming care guidelines centers transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive teens and their families, attending to how affirmation is negotiated within relationships, institutions, and unequal systems of power.

That work continues in the forthcoming National Council on Family Relations article, Governing Families, Governing Therapy, coauthored with my life partner, where we examine how the rapidly shifting U.S. legal landscape, including Chiles v. Salazar, is reshaping access to care, therapeutic speech, and professional judgment.

At a time when 27 states limit youth access to gender-affirming care and many impose penalties on providers, I argue that legal literacy has become part of ethical clinical competence, not an optional area of specialization.

Consultation in Practice

  • Decolonize your practice - MAMFT 2025 Annual Conference

    This training, like many others I facilitate, positioned leadership as the responsibility to examine how colonial assumptions, professional norms, and institutional power shape clinical work with the Southeast Asian diaspora. I guided participants in translating decolonial and systemic theory into concrete questions about whose knowledge is centered, how migration and historical trauma shape families, and what accountable practice requires.

  • Peer Review

    I provide peer review for scholarly journals at the intersections of systemic therapy, sexuality, gender, power, and social justice, including Sexual and Relationship Therapy and the Journal of Feminist Family Therapy. I was recognized as a Sexual and Relationship Therapy Reviewer of the Year for 2025.

  • Children's Law Center of Minnesota

    At the beginning of 2026, I was invited to serve on the Children’s Law Center of Minnesota’s Policy and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees. In these roles, I contribute systemic, clinical, and equity-focused perspectives to organizational efforts supporting the legal rights and well-being of children and youth and advocating for change in the systems that affect their lives.
